My Android phone was sitting in my pocket, fully charged, but trying to do serious work on a small touchscreen felt frustrating. What About Running Windows Apps Directly on Android?
This is where things become more complicated.
Projects such as Winlator have made it possible to run certain Windows applications through compatibility layers on supported Android hardware.
I’ve experimented with this kind of setup, and the results can be impressive—but they’re definitely not universal.
Some lightweight Windows applications may work reasonably well. Others may crash, have graphical problems, lack proper controls, or simply refuse to run.
Don’t expect every Windows program to behave like it does on a desktop PC.

For casual experimentation, it’s interesting. For important work, I’d still prefer either a native Android application or remote access to an actual Windows PC.
My Recommended Setup
If I were building this setup today, I’d keep it simple.
For basic use
Use:
Android phone + Windows-style launcher + Bluetooth mouse + Bluetooth keyboard
This is cheap, portable, and easy to reverse if you don’t like it.
For productivity
Use:
Android phone + desktop mode or supported external display + keyboard + mouse
This gives you a much larger workspace and makes Android feel considerably more like a desktop operating system.
For Windows-only software
Use:
Android phone + remote desktop connection to a Windows PC
This is usually more reliable than trying to make every Windows application run directly on Android.
One Mistake I Made
One thing I learned pretty quickly was not to install five different launcher and desktop apps at the same time.
I initially wanted to compare everything, so I installed several customization tools. The result was exactly what you’d expect: duplicate permissions, notification clutter, confusing settings, and a home screen that didn’t behave consistently.
I eventually removed everything except the tools I actually needed.

My phone gets hot
Running multiple applications while driving an external display can increase workload. Close apps you’re not using and avoid keeping the phone under a pillow or in another poorly ventilated place.
The mouse works but the experience feels awkward
Android isn’t Windows. Some applications are designed primarily for touch, so mouse controls won’t always feel perfect.
My phone doesn’t display anything on the monitor
Check whether your specific phone supports wired video output. Having a USB-C port does not automatically mean that the port can send video to an HDMI display.
Windows apps don’t run properly
That’s also expected with compatibility-layer solutions. Check compatibility for the specific application rather than assuming every .exe program will work.
Can You Actually Replace a Windows Laptop?
For light tasks, sometimes.
If your daily work consists of browsing websites, writing documents, checking email, watching videos, managing files, and using web applications, a modern Android phone with a keyboard, mouse, and large display can handle quite a lot.
But I wouldn’t sell your laptop just yet.
Professional desktop software, advanced video editing, certain programming environments, specialized business applications, and other Windows-specific workloads can still require a real PC.
The biggest advantage of this Android setup is flexibility.
Your phone is already with you. Instead of carrying another computer for simple tasks, you can turn the phone into a small desktop workstation whenever you need one.

For most people, the best approach is to combine a desktop-style launcher with a keyboard and mouse. If your phone supports a proper desktop mode or external display, the experience gets even better.
